FROM ANALOGUE
TO EBIKE

The Adventures of  Oldmaninbaggies is one man’s journey from analogue to ebike. My journey actually. Hi I’m Doug Foulkes and I need help… assistance…. pedal assistance to be honest. I recently turned 60 (60 is the new 30… OK 40) and decided to start riding an ebike for the first time. In this season 2, I want to turn my attention to the myriad of stories out there. Normal people doing amazing things… on a mountian bike.

Who is the Oldmaninbaggies?

Doug Foulkes is the oldmaninbaggies. Recently turned 60. (that’s the old bit). A keen mountain biker who loves to get out on the trails and smell the roses, the fynbos and then afterwards a glass of red wine (or beer). A weekend warrior who would love to #ridemoretrails. And that means getting some help, specifically mechanical assistance in the form of an electric motor.

Where do you ride an e-bike that can go anywhere?

OMiB S2, E1

Meet the mountain bikers who are saving lives…SERIOUSLY. Season 2 of The Adventures of Oldmaninbaggies, this very popular channel, starts with a story from the heart, literally. Le Tour de The Spirit of the Great Heart is possibly the smallest organised 6 day mountain bike event in the world!! Just 6 riders rode from Christiaan Barnard’s home town of Beaufort West (for none South Africans and plebs around the world, the man who performed the first human to human heart transplant, in Cape town on 3rd December 1967), to Somerset West Mediclinic, a distance of over 600kms through the harsh Karoo desert. I caught up with the ride on the final nights celebrations and then followed them on the last day of riding from Paarl, to Somerset West Mediclinic. Joining me was long time friend and recipient of a donor heart himself Billy Macleod and his family.
